To honor the 400th anniversary of playwright William Shakespeare's death, Stephen Buhler, an expert in renaissance literature, will deliver the lecture, "Eloquence in Action: Rhetorics of Response in Shakespeare" at Nebraska Wesleyan University.

Buhler is delivering Nebraska Wesleyan’s annual Holder Lecture, which is now in its 25th year. The lecture will be held Thursday, April 21 at 4 p.m. on the first floor of the library.

Buhler is a professor of English at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the author of several publications on Shakespeare, including Shakespeare in the Cinema: Ocular Proof and "Jazz and Shakespeare" in the forthcoming Shakespeare Encyclopedia. He has lectured on the merging of Shakespearian works and contemporary popular culture, and acted as the text advisor for a plethora of the playwright's productions.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

The Kenneth R. Holder Lecture was established by members of the Department of English in memory of Dr. Kenneth R. Holder, provost and vice president for academic affairs, and professor of English at NWU. The lecture features distinguished scholars in the field of English, English education, or composition theory.

Buhler’s lecture kicks off a weekend of Shakespeare celebrations. On Saturday, April 23 — the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death — Nebraska Wesleyan will display a rare collection of Shakespearean artifacts including early editions of Shakespeare plays NWU has produced since 2000, a first-folio leaf of “Hamlet,” a legal document signed and sealed by the man who owned the land on which the Globe Theatre was built, and more. The entire collection will be available for viewing in the Cochrane-Woods Library.

The Theatre Department will also present “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Kiss Me Kate,” a musical inspired by “The Taming of the Shrew.” One cast will perform both productions. The productions run April 20-24 and April 28-May 1. See theatre schedule.
