The award is the most prestigious honor bestowed to a chapter. The Howard R. Alter, Jr. Award recognizes overall excellence in chapter organization and operations for the most recent academic year. The award honors those chapters that exemplify excellence across a broad spectrum. Eleven chapters out of 132 nationwide were honored with the award.

The Gamma Phi chapter of Theta Chi was founded at Nebraska Wesleyan University on April 30, 1949. Chapter members were honored with the award at the fraternity's national convention in early July.
